Gaming Startups Get Rs2.5B in New Support

Pakistan’s online gaming industry is witnessing exponential growth and is poised to reach 45 million users by the end of 2025, according to IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja. In a written submission to the National Assembly, the minister emphasized how rising smartphone penetration, digital infrastructure improvements, and a tech-forward youth are driving the surge.

Currently, the country boasts over 34 million verified online gamers, with mobile gaming dominating the market. Around 60% of gamers use mobile devices, followed by 30% on PCs and 10% on consoles. The mobile segment continues to lead due to its affordability and accessibility.

Local game developers are increasingly targeting global markets to boost revenues, aligning with broader trends. According to the minister, the global video gaming market stood at $227.6 billion in 2023, while the animation, gaming, and graphics market was valued at $626 billion in 2022. Combined, these sectors are expected to cross the $1 trillion mark by 2030.

Domestically, Pakistan’s gaming and animation sector generated $300 million in revenue during FY2022–23, with $157.9 million attributed to exports. The sector currently employs over 12,000 professionals across 257 companies and raised $36 million in investment during the same fiscal year.

To support this momentum, the government has launched initiatives like the Center of Excellence in Gaming and Animation (CEGA) in Karachi and Lahore. With Rs. 2.5 billion in funding through the Ignite National Technology Fund, the center aims to train 10,000 individuals and support new gaming startups over the next five years.

This strategic push positions Pakistan as an emerging hub in the global gaming and animation ecosystem.
