Satellite Internet Service’s License Delayed as Tensions Rise Over Recent Remarks

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) confirmed that Starlink’s license is still waiting for approval from the Ministry of Information Technology and the newly formed Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board (PSERB).
“Starlink cannot be licensed until it receives government approval,” stated PTA Chairman Maj. Gen. (retd) Hafeez-ur-Rehman during a Senate committee briefing. He further assured that Starlink has agreed to abide by Pakistan’s regulatory policies, including the possibility of shutting down its services at the government’s request.
Senators Demand Accountability from Elon Musk
The controversy has escalated after Musk’s social media comments about grooming gangs in the UK. Senator Dr. Afnanullah criticized the entrepreneur for his remarks, which he deemed offensive to Pakistanis, questioning whether companies with such views should be allowed to operate in Pakistan. “Musk should apologize first, then consider his license,” Afnanullah stated bluntly.
Senator Anusha Rehman also joined the criticism, raising concerns over the potential for even greater propaganda once Starlink begins its operations. “Starlink hasn’t even launched in Pakistan, yet there is already controversy surrounding it,” she remarked.
Pakistan Government Responds to Musk’s Remarks
Musk’s recent tweets, which focused on the involvement of men of Pakistani background in UK grooming gangs, sparked outrage both within Pakistan and internationally. The country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned what it called “racist and Islamophobic” rhetoric, calling out the demonization of an entire community based on the actions of a few individuals.
In light of the ongoing controversy, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has emphasized that no progress can be made on Starlink’s license until the situation is resolved. Another company has also applied for a similar license in Pakistan, and the committee has urged PSERB officials to provide an update in the next meeting.
