Suparco to Launch EO-1, Boosting Tech and Growth
The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) has announced that it will launch Pakistan’s Indigenous Electro-Optical (EO-1) satellite on January 17 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in China, according to APP.
The EO-1 satellite is an advanced imaging system designed to capture high-resolution optical images of Earth. It is intended for diverse applications such as environmental monitoring, urban planning, agriculture, defence, and surveillance.
In the announcement, Suparco highlighted that the EO-1 mission demonstrates the organization’s commitment and expertise in enhancing Pakistan’s technological prowess in space science and innovation. This launch represents a significant milestone in Pakistan’s space exploration efforts.
The domestically developed EO-1 satellite will bolster Pakistan’s capacity to monitor natural resources, respond to natural disasters, enhance food security, and support sustainable development through data-driven decision-making.
The satellite is expected to offer significant advantages across multiple sectors. In agriculture, it will facilitate precision farming by tracking crop conditions, assessing irrigation needs, forecasting yields, and contributing to food security initiatives. For urban development, the satellite will assist in managing infrastructure growth, urban sprawl, and city planning. It will also play a crucial role in environmental monitoring and disaster management by providing timely data on floods, landslides, earthquakes, deforestation, and soil erosion. Furthermore, it will aid in the monitoring and conservation of natural resources, including minerals, oil and gas fields, glaciers, and water bodies.
This achievement aligns with the objectives of Pakistan’s National Space Policy and is poised to position the nation at the forefront of space technology and national development.
Previously, in May last year, Pakistan launched the multi-mission communication satellite PakSat-MM1 to enhance internet and communication services, a project developed in collaboration with the China Great Wall Industry Corporation. Additionally, in November, Suparco partnered with China on the Chang’e 8 lunar exploration mission, scheduled for launch in 2028.
